Closing date for Virgin Megastore at The Block

CORRECTION: All O.C. Macy's to remain open

Virgin Megastore at The Block at Orange

The Virgin Megastore at The Block at Orange is set to close Sunday, as the outdoor mall begins revamping itself with new tenants.

Big signs announcing 50 to 70 percent off discounts adorn the outside of the music store. Inside, undressed mannequins and empty shelves are lined up for sale among a smattering of merchandise - T-shirts, DVDs and CDs.

The closure of Virgin leaves a void of large music stores in Orange County. Three FYE locations are available, as well as small independent music stores and Ritmo Latino that sells mostly Spanish-language music.

Since 2003, about 3,500 music retailers have closed, according to the Almighty Institute of Music Retail. Of those, about 360 werre in California. Seventeen new music stores opened in California last year.

Orange reporter Eugene Fields reports that The Block is in negotiations with Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse to take the spot when Virgin moves out. Read about all of the changes at The Block here.
